Tualatin, Oregon - Now that the new year has arrived, it's the perfect time to plan smarter for your 2026 holiday travel. Whether you're mapping out trips to visit family during Thanksgiving and Christmas or preparing for winter getaways, a little planning can save you hours of hassle and stress. Here's your guide to staying safe and keeping things smooth for all your travel plans this year.

Pick the Right Time to Hit the Road

Timing makes all the difference when it comes to holiday travel planning. For 2026, Thanksgiving falls on Thursday, November 26, and Christmas falls on Friday, December 25. The busiest travel days will be Wednesday, November 25, and Sunday, November 29, for Thanksgiving, with similar patterns around Christmas week. If you can shift your departure by even one day earlier or later, you'll dodge the worst crowds.

Early morning flights give you the best chance at avoiding delays, as weather problems and scheduling issues compound throughout the day. For road trips, leaving on off-peak days means less traffic, shorter gas station lines, and a more relaxed drive overall.

Weather Safety Comes First

Oregon winters demand respect, with icy patches and storms appearing when you least expect them. Before any winter trip, make sure your tires are in good condition and properly inflated. Carry chains or use traction tires, and remember that studded tires are only legal in Oregon between November 1 and April 1.

Decrease your speed and allow at least three times the usual space between you and the car ahead when road conditions are questionable. Never use cruise control on icy roads, and brake gently to prevent skidding. Bridges and overpasses freeze first, so stay extra alert in those areas. Keep an emergency kit in your car with blankets, water, snacks, a flashlight, and a phone charger.

If you're settling into the Tualatin area or thinking about relocating, finding homes close to transport hubs and highways can make your holiday travel infinitely easier with quick access to I-5 and other major routes.

Pack Smart, Travel Light

Creating a packing checklist before you start throwing items in a suitcase saves time and stress. Essential items include comfortable walking shoes, weather-appropriate clothing, toiletries, medications, and chargers for all your devices. Don't forget travel documents, insurance cards, and at least two forms of payment.

For carry-on bags, keep snacks, water bottles, headphones, and entertainment within easy reach. If you're driving, pack extra layers, especially for kids who tend to get cold or hot unpredictably. A small cooler with drinks and snacks can save money and keep everyone happy during long stretches between rest stops.

Managing Kids, Pets, and Long Waits

Traveling with little ones requires extra planning, but it doesn't have to be chaotic. Pack activities like magnetic games, coloring books, and audio stories to keep kids entertained during delays or long drives. Plan stops every two to three hours so children can burn energy and pets can stretch their legs.

For pets, use a crate, harness, or seatbelt designed for animals to keep them secure. Bring familiar blankets, toys, regular food with a couple of days extra, water bowls, and vaccination records. Arriving at airports early gives you buffer time for unexpected bathroom breaks, snack stops, and security line surprises.

Start Your Journey From the Right Place

Planning ahead for 2026 means more than just booking flights and packing bags. It's about setting yourself up for success all year long.
